When did you fall in love with Patti LaBelle and what was it about her that made you fall in love?

Wow. Man. I’ve been loving that woman for so long, and for so many reasons that all of them have turned to mush. It’s like being asked why you love your mother. You just do. (You should, at least).

It’s too easy to say her voice did the trick. Her personality is what has and always will keep me in her corner; I genuinely love and respect her as a person. I’ll never forget the occasions that I met her and the kindness that was shown to me, and others around me (I’m an observer). When you’ve been in the business as long as she has, you have the right to one of two roads: feeling as though you’ve paid your dues and are entitled to do/don’t as you please, or knowing that it’s because of people that you’ve made it as far as you have, so you choose to express that gratitude as often as you can. And she’s definitely that person.

Her voice. Man, there’s just something about it. I don’t know what it is, and that’s what’s scary. It’s like my soul has connected to something my mind can’t even process, but just knows it’s worth the attachment and that I’ll be the better for it.

You ask what made me fall in love, and it was definitely her performances from Motown Returns (i.e You’ll Never Walk Alone x.) Everything about it evokes tears out of me. She sings with no limits, no cares, no filter on her emotions. It’s just straight channeling from its source. Some think it reckless, others find it refreshing and is exactly what they needed to hear/feel.

Before they were even considered episodes. Honestly, Lifetime Achievement Award Part 1 was the most fun I’ve had talking to myself…ever. It really was me rambling on, not even knowing where I’d end up.
